Report from participation in
46th session of IMO/NAV, July 2000
The secretary of ISO/TC8/SC5 participated in the delegation from ISO/TC8 at the 46th session of IMO Sub-committee on Safety of Navigation 10-14 July 2000.
The reason for this participation was related specific to agenda item 6 Guidelines on Ergonomic Criteria for Bridge Equipment and Layout. ISO/CD 14612.2 was submitted to IMO/NAV and circulated as document NAV 46/Inf.6.
Introduction of ISO/CD 14612.2 to IMO/NAV
A short introduction of ISO/CD 14612.2 on Ship's Bridge Layout given by the SC5-secretary at the opening of agenda item 6 in the plenary session included reporting on the result of the voting on the 2nd CD and also the subsequent decision for modification of the title in accordance with the comments from US.
The IMO Correspondence Group on Ergonomic Criteria for Bridge Equipment and Layout made its introduction of its document just before the presentation by SC5.
A short discussion in the plenary session followed the introduction of the two documents. The general impression of this discussion is
- the existence of ISO CD 14612 with its detailed specification for design of ships bridges is recognized by IMO
- the recognition of ISO/CD 14612 by IMO is linked closely together with the modification of the title as proposed by US at the 2nd CD voting, and the deletion of any wording with respect to sole look out and sole watch keeping
- the IMO/NAV document on Ergonomic Criteria is seen important. It should be a "guideline", dealing with the subject at a high level of abstraction
A detailed presentation of the technical content of ISO/CD 14612.2 was prepared, for the situation that a such presentation would be actual.
Finalized IMO-document on Ergonomic Criteria
Conclusion of comments and finalizing of the document Ergonomic Criteria for Bridge Equipment and Layout was a major issue in the agenda for the meeting session of the NAV/Technical Working Group on Navigational Aids.
