If you observe how the expert esophageal speakers take the air in, you will notice that most of them vocalize while taking in a portion of air once, and then continue the speech while inhaling the air in the same manner, to make the speech like a normal person.

First of all, for your easy understanding, I would like to make a logical explanation of how this method contributes to smooth speaking. Because of the operation, we laryngectomees cannot inhale the air through the nose and consequently the air needed for the vocalization is inhaled through the mouth. There are two methods for taking in the air ; the swallowing method and the inhalation method.

In the swallowing method, the air in the oral cavity is pushed down to the esophagus little by little with up-and-down movement of the mouth just like when one is chewing food. This method cannot let the continuous and sufficient supply of air into the esophagus.
