6) /w/, /j/, /h/

 

In pronouncing /w/, the lips are closely rounded (as for /u:/); there is considerable raising of the tongue back in the direction of the soft palate; the soft palate is in its raised position. It is called a semi-vowel and is voiced.

 

Words for exercising:

wag, way, will, want, wolf; away, always, twelve, sweet, quite; we would work if we were wise.

 

In pronouncing /j/, the tongue front is raised rather high in the direction of the hard palate (as for /;/), the lips are spread; the soft palate is in its raised position. It is called a semi-vowel and is voiced.
