1978/ The opening of World Trade Centre, a 13-storey complex, which provides over 61,000 sq metres exhibition/conference facilities, and office and retail space

/ Introduction of the Appropriated Berth Scheme at Keppel Wharves to maximise the use of facilities. Under this scheme, shipping lines enjoyed priority berthing and volume discounts.

 

1979 / Mr Lim Kim San was appointed the Chaiman of PSA in February.1979, and he served until August 1994

 

1981/ Godown 407, the longest warehouse in Singapore, was built at Pasir Panjang Wharves

/ PSA was the first statutory board in Singapore to form Quality Circles

/ PSA achieved its first one million TEUs' record

 

1982 / New Clubhouse providing wide range of sports and recreational facilities for staff was built

/ PSA held its first Quality Circle (QC) Convention

/ Singapore became the world's busiest port in terms of shipping tonnage

 

1984 / World Trade Centre became the market leader in exhibition space and attained its status as the premier exhibition centre in the region

 

1985 / Conversion of daily-rated employees to monthly-rated

/ Childcare Centre at Clubhouse was built

 

1986 / PSA's head quarters, the 40-storey PSA Building, was completed (below)

1987 / Establishment of computer-to-computer links by PSA with local customers

/ PSA organised its first National Day Observance Ceremony
