b. Fatalities and injuries resulting from accidents involving pleasure craft
Accidents involving pleasure craft in 1998 resulted in 110 fatalities and injuries, a decline of 47 from the previous year. Fatalities and injuries are particularly prevalent in this type of marine accident. Accordingly, although accidents involving pleasure craft, at 221, accounted for only 2.7% of the total number of marine accidents in 1998, fatalities and injuries caused by these accidents, at 110, represented 20.5% of all fatalities and injuries resulting from marine accidents.
Of the total number of fatalities and injuries resulting from marine accidents involving pleasure craft in 1998, 25 were fatalities, six were missing persons and 79 were injuries. Fatalities increased by two from 1997, while missing persons and injuries decreased by three and 46, respectively. Accidents involving motor boats were responsible for 49, or 44.5%, of total fatalities and injuries.
