(6) Marine accidents involving pleasure craft

The marine accidents involving pleasure craft (a generic term describing motor boats, yachts, marine motorbikes and rowboats) has risen steadily in recent years.

a. Category of accident involving pleasure craft

Collisions involving pleasure craft in 1998 numbered 101 and accounted for the largest share of the total number of marine accidents involving pleasure craft at 45.7%. This was followed by accidents resulting in fatalities and injuries, which amounted to 27, or 12.2% of the total, and those resulting in capsizing, which came to 24, or 10.9% of the total.

The number of motorboats involved in marine accidents declined by 18, while the number of other types of pleasure craft remained on a par with the previous year.
