// I'm sure no-one would dispute that in the 'Education' seafarers receive in today's world, communication training needs to be part of the 'core' curriculum; and also that in today's complicated maritime environment, that training must be provided in the English language. As stated in my previous Papers at these AMETIAP Conferences, we may prefer otherwise, but English is the established medium of maritime communication, as explained in many IMO documents, clearly stated in STCW 95 and also in the ISM CODE.

// So, if seafarers are well trained and alert-we would presume they can also communicate and work efficiently, ensuring their ship operates safely and complies with all the international regulations regarding preventing pollution in any form, so maintaining a cleaner shipping industry.

Then why, ladies and gentlemen, do we still have these accidents and so many reports of poor, or non-communication between international ships' crews at sea and ashore?

// It is important then that this year's workshop on Maritime English keeps a close eye on the theme of the entire Conference and the next questions we need to ask revolve around how we may best implement the requirements of the theme into communication training at our respective establishments?
