'Training in Maritime English for a more efficient, safer and cleaner shipping industry.'

I would first like to discuss the theme of this workshop, providing background information and relevance to the training aspects given in the workshop title; after which there will be time for small group discussion which will be partly guided by specific questions; then together, we will review the group reports. It is my task to summarise the Workshop for the Conference at 5 pm.

// You may have noted that the theme of this 1999 AMETIAP Conference has been adapted slightly for immediate relevance to this workshop; however, the Conference theme is remarkably apt when we consider the implications for seafarers communicating with each other; whether interacting on board ship, listening and responding to Pilots' instructions, talking to other ships or to personnel ashore in Vessel Traffic Services, or answering questions from Port State Control officials-in all these situations seafarers' need to communicate efficiently , using correct vocabulary and maritime terms; where this is so, the ship its crew and cargo should proceed safely, without causing any harm to the marine environment-SO helping to ensure the oceans and seas remain Clean.

// We need also to ask ourselves about the "Education"-which is required to reach an idyllic standard where ships do not collide where traffic separation systems operate: eg 'Norwegian Dream (cruise ship) where containerships do not collide with light Towers: eg 'DOLE AMERICA' - and where pilots can be assured their instructions are understood and carried out correctly rather than the non-communication pilots have reported in recent years on vessels with multinational crews.
