5. Purport of the Symposium

The opening remarks were given by Mr. Hirano, President of JAMSTEC and Dr.Matsuno, Director General, FRSGC on behalf of the organizer. It was followed by two key note speeches; “Model Assessment of Decadal Variability and Trends in the Pacific Ocean” (Dr. S. Manabe, FRSGC) and, “Sustained Observation of the Indian Ocean : Application for Research and Socio-economic Benefits” (Dr. G. Meyers, CSIRO).

The First Session “Indian Ocean Climate” was chaired by Dr. S. Godfrey, CSIRO, Australia, and Prof. T. Yamagata, Program Director of the FRSGC.

The Second Session was held under the theme of “Southern Ocean Variability” and chaired by Dr. W. White (Scripps Institute of Oceanography, USA), and Dr. Motoi (FRSGC).

Tuesday, March 7 started with the Third Session “Air-Sea Interaction in the Western Pacific” (Chairs: Dr. P. Delecluse (LODYC, France) and Dr. T. Nakazawa (JMD)).

Last session, Fourth Session was “Monsoon Dynamics” and it was chaired by Dr. A. Navarra (IMGA-CNR, Italy, EU) and Dr. H. Nakamura (FRSGC).

Before closing, Dr. Yamagata and other session chairs presented the outlines of four sessions. Dr. Meyers introduced a prospect for the upcoming Indian Ocean Observation meeting to be held in Perth in November 2000. As a closing address, Prof. Yamagata expressed his thanks to the participants, and the symposium then ended.

 

6. Outcomes

Speakers: Total 42 speakers (Australia 5; China 1; France 4; India 2; Italy 1; Korea 2; U.K. 1; U.S.A. 6; Japan (MRI, NIED, and Japanese universities) 7; FRSGC 16)

Totally about 160 people participated in the Symposium. They were from universities, research institutes, Embassies, governmental agencies, private companies and the press.
