Annual Report on the Transport Economy
This is a public report presented by the government regarding the current status and future issues in various areas of national transportation policy. Produced through coordinated action among relevant ministries and agencies, it is published after approval by the Cabinet. The Ministry of Transport issues the annual report in or around November each year. Until 1963, a separate annual report was issued for each transportation field one for marine transportation, one for aviation, and so on. However, since 1964, the ministry has issued a single paper covering all areas under its jurisdiction, adding comprehensive economic analysis to deepen public awareness of various issues and to provide reference data for research.
Action plan for reducing the costs of transport-related public works projects
Against a background of fiscal austerity and an aging society, pressure is building for greater efficiency in public works projects. In April 1997, the government adopted action guidelines designed to reduce the costs of public works projects. In response, the Ministry of Transport compiled a set of specific measures for reducing costs in the construction of railways, ports, airports, and navigation aides. It also devised an action plan to reduce costs of transport-related public works projects. This action plan incorporates comprehensive measures in each stage of transport-related public works projects, from planning to actual construction. The plan specifies a cost reduction target of at least 10% in an effort to set a goal the public can easily understand.
