Advancements in logistics systems

Logistics is an organic system linking the entire network of organizations and functions. Advancement in the logistics system means strengthening this organic linkage in both "hard" (plant and equipment) and "soft" (legal or personnel systems) aspects. The basic goals of the logistics system advancement are to raise efficiency and lower costs. To significantly improve the system, it will be necessary to promote inter-modal transport, consolidated cargo transportation along trunk routes, and existing business practices. Furthermore, recent developments in our advanced IT society should be utilized to develop such systems as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and the Vehicle Information & Communication System (VICS). Incorporation of information technology will be essential for progress in the logistics system.

Building logistics centers

Logistics centers are physical locations where cargo is stored, loaded, unloaded, and sorted. More specifically, they are freight train stations, warehouses, storage depots, and truck terminals. Constructing logistics centers, which function as the hub of logistics activities, will play a major role in enhancing logistics efficiency and reducing logistics costs. In 1998, the Ministry of Transport released its "Vision for New Physical Distribution Centers," which sets the targets of (1) promoting systematic construction of physical distribution centers, (2) focusing on functional patterns in building such facilities, (3) encouraging the establishment of physical distribution centers easily acceptable to local communities, and (4) promoting coordination between physical distribution centers and social infrastructure. The report also expects to achieve safer and smoother traffic as well as environmental protection.
