SC 2 Marine environmental protection (USA)
The report is introduced by Mr. Hime without additional comment.
SC 3 Piping and machinery (USA)
Admiral Hopkins gives a detailed report of SC 3 activities. He reports that ISO/CS expressed that the title becomes too lenghy by having "Ships and Marine Technology" at the beginning of each title of standards under consideration or review and that it cannot agree to the current long titles. The Chairman concluded that the title should include "ships and marine technology' in each standard and if the title is too lengthy it should be shortened in the remaining words of the title. This is not only important to the industry, but IMO has come to recognize these words in our titles. We must remember our customers' needs and desires.
SC 4 Outfitting and deck machinery (China)
The Chinese delegate requests cooperation, because the number of experts participating in WI15516 (Launching appliances for davit - launched lifeboats) is only one. Based on a proposal from Mr. Hime, a recommendation is concluded to the effect that the SC 4 Secretary request the SC 1 Secretary to insure that lifeboat experts' participation in the SC 4 meetings, and to submit a list of participants. Further it is decided that the next meeting shall be held as a SC 1 and SC 4 coordination meeting.

The ISO/TC 8 Advisory Group recommends that the SC 1 secretariat provide the SC 4 Secretariat the names and addresses of SC 1 members who might be interested in participating in SC 4 WI 15516 -Launching appliances for davit - launched lifeboats
SC 5 Ships' bridge layout (Denmark)
Mr. Van Dijk reports that ISO/CD 14612 - Ship's bridge for one person operation - was circulated and some country submitted 20 pages of comments. Some comments are technical; others are political. Technical comments are handled simply by experts, but political comments at national level require toilsome efforts to persuade. In any case, the draft may be transferred to the FDIS stage in near future. The Chair notes that SC 5 meets in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA on 1999-06-03/04 where this item will be discussed.
SC 6 Navigation (Japan)
Mr. Arikawa reports that with regard to IHO Specification M-4 Navigational chart, Mr. Abram has been in contact with the IHO Secretariat. The reaction of the IHO Secretariat was such that firstly the work of the revision of ISO standards should be handled by the IHO side, and, secondly delay in work might occur if the work were to be performed jointly with ISO. ISO/CS had considered, as an idea, the dispatching of technical advisors to IHO, but has been requesting IHO by email to cooperate with ISO by getting involved in the ISO/TC 8's deliberation in accordance with ISO's practice. So far, the communication between both sides has been maintained under a gentleman's agreement. However, henceforth, it is considered necessary to prepare an agreement between ISO/TC 8/SC6 and IHO regarding the procedure of deliberation. Regarding ISO/WD 16273 - Performance requirements for night vision equipment for high speed craft, Mr. Van Dijk supplies kind information which suggests that Mr. Arikawa officially request Mr. Schade (Secretary of CEN/TC300) to contact a Spanish expert who can communicate and cooperate with CEN/TC300.
The Chairman expresses his gratitude to Mr. Arikawa, and also for Prof. Iijima, for the great efforts, particularly those applied to building the framework of outstanding cooperation with IMO/NAV.
