Executive summary: this document identifies ISO standards that may form the basis of a strategy to develop guidelines in support of IMO objectives with respect to prevention of air pollution from ships.

This document identifies exampIes of standards developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that may relate to agenda items 10.1 through 10.5 identified in IMO DE 42/1, Provisional Agenda for the forty-second session of the Sub-Committee. It is hoped that this preliminary list of candidate standards will help the Sub-Committee make an informed decision regarding the direction and development of guidelines under MARPOL Annex VI.
Research in this area also reveals the existence of a number of national standards that might also be useful in determining what guidelines or international standards need to be developed to support the Sub-Committee's objectives with regard to MARPOL Annex VI.
Action requested of the Sub-Committee
The Sub-Committee is invited to note that ISO Technical Committee on Ships and Marine Technology (ISO/TC 8) is interested in assisting the Sub-Committee by developing the international standards in support of IMO guidelines that are deemed necessary by the Sub-Committee with regard to MARPOL Annex VI.
