Fuel tank material, design and marking

C.1A.5 Materials

Table C.1 gives minimum material thicknesses for metallic tanks required for corrosion resistance. Other materials including non-metallic materials may be used if they demonstrate equivalent fuel and corrosion resistance to materials listed.

C.2A.6 Design

C.2.1 All fittings and openings shall be on top of petrol tanks, except metallic fill and ventilation pipes, which may be connected to the sides or ends of metal petrol tanks, provided that they are welded to the tank and reach above the top of the tank.

C.2.2 Diesel tanks may have side inspection openings. Fittings in the bottom, sides or ends are allowed provided that each such connection has a shut-off valve closely coupled to the tank. The valve shall be protected or located to prevent physical damage or be of at least 25 mm nominal diameter. All other openings or fittings shall be at or above the top of the tank, except welded pipes, complying with C.2.1.

C.2.3 Diesel tank drains, where fitted, shall have a shut-off valve having a plug on the outlet that can only be removed by the use of tools.

C.2.4 Metal tanks shall be so designed and installed that no exterior surface will trap water.

C.2.5 Rigid fuel pick-up tubes and fill pipes which extend near the tank bottom shall have sufficient clearance to prevent contact with the bottom due to flexing of the tank.

NOTE Depending on tank volume, shape and material, internal baffles or similar arrangements may be required.

C.3A.7 Marking

All fuel tanks shall display the following information in contrasting or embossed letters and numerals at least 3 mm high:

- manufacturer's name or trademark, city or equivalent, and country;

- year of manufacture (last two digits);

- design capacity, in litres;

- fuel or fuels in symbols for which the tank is suitable (as specified in ISO 11 192);

- maximum allowable test pressure, in kilopascals;

- non metallic tanks, fire tested in accordance with Annex B, shall be labelled or marked "ISO 10088".

Annex D

(informative)
