6. Proposal for drop test
T. Kano (JCI) at the meeting proposed to use an alternative method for scantling conformity assessment in form of a drop test, which has been successfully used for small boats in Japan.
There were several fundamental questions raised, e.g.
- limitations as to boat length
- how to assess the side scantlings
- what about loading condition and trim
- only one time measurement
- it will be impossible to detect minor cracks
- the long-term effect cannot be predicted.
It became evident that most of the members feel uneasy about introducing this drop test instead of a calculation assessment, as the approach is so different that it would need verification of scantlings to both methods first to be sure to have achieved consistency.
There was no final decision taken, however.
7. Date and place of next meeting
The next meeting within the regular schedule could be held in autumn of this year. Date and place to be announced.
