RESEARCH WORK : VISIBILITY OF LLL AS A FUNCTION OF WIDTH AND SMOKE DENSITY
Visibility of photoluminescent stripes is dependent of optical density of the smoke and the width of the stripe. We have lot of research information about visibility of clear contrasts (Blackwell), but we have no information about contrasts where the borderline is diffuse. That will happen with LLL in smoke. Smoke will scatter the light, and the visibility will be redused by luminance loss in the smoke and indistinct border between the LLL system and the background.
The loss of information about visibility in smoke makes it difficult to make international rules for escape routes, special in marine sector. We already know from scientific work that use of photoluminescent stripes makes better and faster evacuation, but lack of information about visibility and the width of the stripe gives discussions based on believe and not on facts. This is bad for the photoluminescent business sector.
The National Institute of Technology and Oslo College, Faculty of Engineering, will start a research work with the intention to find the relation between visibility, width of the stripe and smoke density.
We invite the photoluminescent business sector to support us in this work with money to by necessary equipment for the scientific work. The result will be publicated in English in a complete scientific report.
