[The actual situation of EDI]
A section of a large freight forwarder company is using EDI for shipping instruction, B/L, invoices, freight status and so on, but EDI is by no means in general use.
In the case of Consigner companies, EDI is already in interchange for shipping instruction, B/L, invoices, CLP, freight status and so on. There is a great deal of data interchange within the consigners' own company group, however data interchange with other companies is still very scarce.
Ocean shipping companies are already using EDI to interchange a large quantity of messages. It has proved to be extremely positive for the interchange of data. As well, the hearing results revealed that several companies thought the exchange of data using standardized EDI was providing much merit to Carrier companies.
In the case of Terminal companies, there is a small amount of Bayplan data interchange in use, but there seems to be no desire to expand EDI anymore than is being used presently.
In the case of NVOCC, e-mail is being used to exchange data between Carrier agencies in Japan and affiliated Carrier agencies overseas. Therefore the desire to use EDI has become extremely high.
