A Report on the Investigation of Project International EDI
1. Requested contents:
The trial of EDIFACT in Japan has been put into operation in the International Port Logistics related fields. The plan next, is to extend the trial of international EDI overseas. In relation to the preparation of operations, firstly, the present situation of EDI and its needs for the Business sectors and the administration, have to be investigated. From the results of the investigation, a trial plan will be made and then together with our partner countries negotiations will be carried out, eventually settling on a final plan.
2. Way of investigation:
We asked for the participation of the following businesses and government offices in the questionnaire: Domestic Export Traders, Maritime/ ship related companies, NVO, Forwarder related companies, Customs (entry) Clearance and Port Managers. After judging the answers from the questionnaire, a couple of companies were chosen from the numerous related businesses and government offices and a meeting was held where we asked in more detail about the contents of their answers. (to the questionnaire.) Through POLISA the plan was conveyed e-mail to the overseas maritime related EDI organizations. The questionnaire was to identify whether there is interest in, and willingness to cooperate in, the necessary work needed for the promotion of international EDI. From the results of investigation, particular parts were selected.
3. Scope of the project plan:
The initial project plan that was in effect regarding international EDI needs, can be seen in the table below.
The Special Project Committee discussed on the scope of the project plan taking consideration into government network systems currently under development. It was concluded that for the time being there was no need for international between government offices, and between government offices and private corporations, and so it was excluded altogether. It was decided in the present trial that EDI would only be used between private corporations.
