東京クヮルテットは世界最高の室内楽アンサンブルの一つである。1970年に難関ミュンヘン国際音楽コンクールで圧倒的優勝を収めて以来、世界各地で超一流のクヮルテットとして活躍。その卓越した技巧と優美でダイナミックな演奏スタイルは常に称賛の的である。
1969年、桐朋出身・ジュリアード音楽院で学んだチェロの原田禎夫、ヴィオラの磯村和英を含む日本人4人によってニューヨークで結成され、1974年に第2ヴァイオリンが池田菊衛に交代、96/97シーズンから第1ヴァイオリンがミハイル・コペルマンに交替する中、新メンバーが加わる毎に新しい魅力で更なる賞賛を浴びてきた。幾多の困難を乗り越え常に上昇を続ける彼等を支えてきたのは、弦楽四重奏への愛と情熱、自分たちの全てをクヮルテットに捧げてきた堅固な信念である。
94/95シーズンに結成25周年を迎え、2年間に亘りベートーヴェンの弦楽四重奏曲全曲演奏のチクルスを世界各国で行ったが、この演奏はNYではカーネギーホールとエイブリー・フィッシャーの2大ホール共催で両ホールでの6回演奏会という異例の快挙となり大きな話題となった。
クヮルテットのメンバーは、イエール大学及びシンシナチイ音楽院のレジデンス・アーティストである。BMGクラシックス/RCAレッド・シールと専属契約を結び、最近の録音にはヤナーチェクの弦楽四重奏曲2曲とカップリングされたバルトークの弦楽四重奏曲全集、クラリネットのリチャード・ストルツマンとの共演に依るブラームスとウェーバーのクラリネット五重奏曲のCD等が有る。数々の賞の受賞の他、グラミー賞にも7回ノミネートされている。
Tokyo String Quartet
The Tokyo String Quartet is one of the supreme chamber ensemble of the world. Praised for its exceptional technical command and elegant performance style, the TSQ has received extraordinary acclaim since its founding in 1969. The ensemble performs over 100 concerts each year across the United States, Canada, Europe, South America and the Far East.
The members of the Quartet serve on the faculty of the Yale School of Music. They are also Artists-in-Residence at the University of Cincinnati Collge-Conservatory of Music. Recording exclusively for BMG Classics/RCA Victor Red Seal, the TSQ has released a landmark series of recordings. Recent offerings include the complete Bartok String Quartets coupled with the two Janacek Quartets, and the complete Beethoven string quartets.
The Tokyo String Quartet traces its origins to the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, where the founding members were profoundly influenced by Professor Hideo Saito. The original members of the TSQ went to NY to study at The Juilliard School. In 1969, the TSQ was officially created and soon after, it won prizes at the Munich Competition and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, which brought the group worldwide attention. Violist Kazuhide Isomura and cellist Sadao Harada are founding members of the Quartet. In 1974, violinist Kikuei Ikeda who also studied at the Toho Gakuen School of Music and the Juilliard School, joined as the second violinist. In 1996, Mikhail Kopelman, who used to be with the Borodin Quartet as the first violinist for two decades, joined the TSQ as the first violinist.
