現在、人気、実力ともに日本を代表するヴァイオリニスト。ヴァイオリニストの父茂および鷺見三郎氏に師事。桐朋学園音楽科にて斎藤秀雄氏に師事。1966年、当時日本楽団史上最年少のコンサートマスターとして東京交響楽団に入団。1968年、文化庁在外派遣研究生としてベルリンへ留学。1976年NHK交響楽団のコンサートマスターに就任。その後首席第一コンサート・マスターを経て、ソロ・コンサートマスターの重責を担い、長年NHK交響楽団の"顔"として抜群の知名度と人気を誇る。1994年、NHK交響楽団を退団し、ソロ、室内楽に専念している。
NHKにおける活躍と同時に、ヨーロッパ、アメリカ各地から招待され、オーケストラとの共演及びリサイタル出演も数多くこなした。また小澤征爾指揮、サイトウ・キネン・オーケストラのヨーロッパ、アメリカ・ツアーにもコンサー卜・マスターとして同行、サイトウ・キネン・フェステイヴァルにもたびたび参加している。
NHK交響楽団退団後は、1995年から東京のJTアートホールの音楽監督を務め、1996年からは宮崎国際室内楽音楽祭の総合プロデューサーを務めるなど、日本の室内楽の分野における中心的立場を確固たるものとしている。
Tsugio Tokumaga (Violinist)
Tsugio Tokunaga began studies with his violinist father, Shigeru Tokunaga, at the age of five.
At the Toho Gakuen School of Music in 1962, Tokunaga studied under the late Hideo Saito. In 1966, he became the youngest concertmaster in Japan, s history when he accepted this position with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.
Awarded the Japanese government scholarship in 1968 for overseas studies, Tokunaga went to Berlin to study under Michel Schwalbe. In 1976, Tokunaga was appointed concertmaster of the NHK Symphony Orchestra, a post which he held until 1994. Also in 1991, he was appointed by Seiji Ozawa as concertmaster of the Saito Kinen Orchestra for their European and North America tours.
In May 1994, Tsugio Tokunaga left his post as concertmaster of the NHK Symphony Orchestra to pursue other projects. His current activities include organizing music festivals throughout Japan, including the Miyazaki International Music Festival of which he has been General Director since 1995. In addition, Tokunaga continues his chamber music, solo recitals, and orchestral concert activities. He is also devoted to teaching young musicians as an adjunct professor at Toho Gakuen School of Music.
