Exhaust gas de-NOx system
Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (KHI) is promoting the development of energy saving ships to realize environment-friendly ships.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted a new Protocol and Annex VI relating to the prevention of air pollution from ships at the London meeting in September 1997. Annex VI restricts the NOx content in the exhaust gas from slow speed engines (less than 130 rpm) installed on ships which will be constructed on or after January 1, 2000 to 17 g/kW.h or below (nearly 30% reduction compared with conventional engines).
The MAN B&W group companies, including KHI, have conducted research into improvements of fuel injection valves and combustion timing controls to reduce the NOx emissions from diesel engines, and have already established the technology satisfying the IMO Annex VI requirement. To further reduce NOx emissions, KHI continues to study the use of water emulsified fuel (a fuel and water mixture at a 1:1 ratio) and achieved about 35% NOx reduction at shop tests.
