Thirteen more are scheduled for completion by May 2001 to raise the total of MHI-built container ships of this series to 18.
The D series, of which 10 ships have so far been built by MHI, is made up of 4,200-TEU Panamax size container ships intended for the westbound round-the-world service, following the R series. Vessels of the D series are powered by main engines of the same type as the U series for higher service speed.
Container ships of all the three series, R, U and D, are designed to meet the Evergreen Group's basic principle calling for "less maintenance and easy operation,"and all the machinery and equipment installed aboard them are selected in compliance with the same principle. The underlying idea is to secure punctual service and safe navigation through the use of reliable machinery and equipment and to impose no extra burden on the crews. This reflects the basic posture of the Evergreen Group, whose motto is to "provide quality service to customers."
Worthy of particular note is the service speed of every series, ranging from 23 to 25 knots, which makes important contributions to enhancing the speed and punctuality of the Evergreen Group's container service.
