MarFlex-Taiko Deepwell Cargo Pump

After it began manufacturing gear-type cargo pumps (of 60 to 1,500m3/h in capacity) in the 1960s, Taiko Kikai expanded its range of products in the 1970s by adding centrifugal cargo pumps (of 150 to 2000 m3/h) and twin-shaft screw-type cargo pumps (of 50 to 1,800 m3/h) for use in small tankers and products carriers. The company has also delivered engine room pumps and pollution-prevention equipment (including sewage treatment plants and oily water separators) to shipowners and shipbuilders, both Japanese and foreign.

With the further addition of MarFlex-Taiko deepwell cargo pumps recently announced at Sea Exhibition '98, the manufacturer's range of products has been further expanded to satisfy the diverse needs of shipping lines and shipyards worldwide.

MarFlex-Taiko deepwell cargo pumps are manufactured by Marflex in Dutch and sold by Taiko in Japan under a joint business arrangement between Taiko Kikai, with its extensive deliveries and experience in cargo pump systems for ships ranging from small tankers to products carriers, and Dutch-based MarFlex, with service bases worldwide for its electric deepwell pump systems. MarFlex-Taiko products are now locally available to shipowners and shipbuilders.

MarFlex-Taiko deepwell cargo pumps represent solutions to a number of problems with conventional deepwell pumps available on the market. One of their remarkable features is the use of an explosion-proof motor, which is free from the noise and vibration problems inevitable with hydraulic driving and which also offers improved controllability. Another feature is the arrangement of an intermediate drive shaft within a separate supporting pipe. The bearings of the intermediate shaft are lubricated with oil to eliminate the risks of damage from cargo liquid and of cargo contamination due to wear of the bearing material.

Furthermore, the pump head can be removed in its entirety from the pipe stack, making it easy to maintain. After draining with a dedicated drain pump, the inside of the drain pump can be air-purged to replace the residual drain and ready the pump for use on the next voyage.
