Mobile Hydraulic Oil Centrifugal Separator "emmie"

Alfa Laval has developed emmie, the world's first mobile hydraulic oil separator to use centrifugal separation. The use of emmie can enhance the reliability of vital and sensitive marine hydraulic systems, reduce wear on components, and extend the lifetime of hydraulic oil, emmie consists of a very small separator, MlB303, weighing only 18kg, mounted together on a trolley with a built-in screw pump and control unit. An accompanying mobile oil preheater is connected to the separator with a quick coupling and a non-return valve. Both the separator and the preheater can work on 110V/230V AC power anywhere on board.

Features:

1. The cleaning procedure for hydraulic oil is revolutionized.

About 90 percent of hydraulic system failures on board and in industry are due to water or fine particles in hydraulic oil. The mobile centrifugal separation system emmie for hydraulic oil, embodying a revolutionary concept developed by Alfa Laval, enhances the reliability of vital and sensitive marine hydraulic systems, reduces wear on components, and extends the lifetime of filters and hydraulic oil.

2. Cleaning efficiency surpasses 99 percent.

The emmie system offers a removal efficiency of more than 99 percent for particles (2 to 5 μm in particle size) and almost 100 percent for water. This feature serves to increase the reliability and utilization rate of the system, reduce the frequency of filter replacement, extend the lifetime of hydraulic oil significantly, and make possible recycling of hydraulic oil.

3. Applications:

- Bow thrusters, stern thrusters and directional thrusters

- Controllable pitch propellers

- Deck cranes

- Hatch covers

- Ramps

- Stabilizers

- Lubricating oil for stern tubes

- Lubricating oil for steam turbines, etc,

4. Hydraulic oil, not hydraulic equipment, is maintained.

In spite of the increasing sophistication of hydraulic systems, these systems continue to use conventional full flow type filters. However, as the frequency of hydraulic system failures suggests, the performance level of these filters is not satisfactory. Given the fact that more than 90 percent of hydraulic system failures on board are due to water or fine particles in hydraulic oil, it is more reasonable to focus maintenance efforts on hydraulic oil than on hydraulic equipment.

Thus, emmie is a system which excels over conventional cleaning systems for hydraulic oil in purifying efficiency, running costs of hydraulic units themselves, trouble prevention, and environmental friendliness.
