As economics is also very important for shipowners, their task is to decide upon and explain their requirement for the balance between reliability and economy. Otherwise, engine manufacturers and shipyards will naturally lean in the easier direction and change the balance toward an unproportionate balance for lower reliability, which is to their benefit. Creating a standard of reliability is being able to decide how to distribute merits of technical improvement to reliability and economy. Having a wide perspective with sufficient knowledge, along with high skills is necessary to attain the best balance between reliability and economy.

After the delivery of ships, in case a problem occurs, especially during the guarantee term, the three concerned parties, i.e. shipowner, shipyard and manufacturer of equipment are hard hit financially.
