In the spring of 1995, NYK began a feasibility study for a new generation container ship (more than 6,000 TEU) and our first decision lay in selecting a possible candidate from the following:
(1) Electric propulsion system
(2) Twin engines and twin screws
(3) Single engine ─ New type of very powerful engine
The first candidate was dropped because of its high initial cost. The second one was also dropped because of its high initial cost, as well as its high maintenance cost. As a result, NYK earnestly studied this new type of engine which became the main focus of our study.
