between the licensers, therefore shipowners can suggest suitable design points for the equipment, in the sense of minimizing future trouble caused by basic design faults, to other licenser's one. For example, with the main bearing problem, we were able to show them a similar solution which was successful in other manufacture's equipment.

We would like to herewith introduce our mode of attack for the best and most powerful main engine worldwide: the 11RTA96C.

In the spring of 1995, NYK began a feasibility study for a new generation container ship (more than 6,000 TEU) and our first decision lay in selecting a possible candidate from the following:

(1) Electric propulsion system

(2) Twin engines and twin screws

(3) Single engine ─ New type of very powerful engine

The first candidate was dropped because of its high initial cost. The second one was also dropped because of its high initial cost, as well as its high maintenance cost. As a result, NYK earnestly studied this new type of engine which became the main focus of our study.

 

Equipment Selection Process

Initially, we researched any technical improvements or innovations that had come out in the past several years which led us to the conclusions below.
