6. PRINCIPAL COMPONENTS

 

6-1 CRANK SHAFT

Fig. shows the outline of crank shaft made of high quality forged steel with high tensile strength and continuous grain flow. Surfaces on journals and pins are induction hardened to improve the fatigue strength. The large counter weight is provided with crank shaft arms to the reduce bearing load by killing off the imbalance forces.

6-2 ENGINE FRAME AND MAIN BEARING

Engine frame is the hanging type and provided with adequate strength against high combustion pressure. The charge air manifold is cast in, and makes up a double wall construction which is very effective in reducing the noise level and increasing strength for engine frame. The L.O. gallery and the C.W. manifold are integrated into the frame far ease of maintenance, and reduction of connection with the outside.

The main bearing caps are made of nodular cast iron and are hydraulically tightened-up in both directions underneath and side-ways so that deformation of the bearing bore can be kept to a minimum.
