The interannual oscillation is absent in a test solution when coupling is suppressed from 10。? to 10。?, demonstrating that near-equatorial, ocean-atmosphere interactions are essential for its existence. Both tropical and subtropical variables, however, have a decadal oscillation that closely resembles that in the main-run oscillation, indicating that its origin lies outside the tropics. To locate the generation region more precisely, we obtained a test solution without coupling both from 10。? to 10。? and from north of 35。?.
