SAFETY OF NAVIGATION

Review of the Rules and Recommendations on navigation through the Straits of Bosporus, the Strait of Dardanelles and the Marmara Sea*

Note by Greece

Background

1　　　　The Sub-Committee on Safety of Navigation at its forty-third session pursuant to the request of the nineteenth Assembly, as specified in paragraph 5 of resolution A.827(19) concluded with a package of suggestions for:

.1　　　amendments to the routeing system (TSS) in the Straits;

.2　　　revised Rules and Recommendations on navigation through the Straits and

.3　　　Recommendations addressed to the Government of Turkey

2　　　　The twentieth Assembly considered the report of NAV 43 and by resolution A.859(20) welcomed the wish of all member Governments to co-operate on this issue.

3　　　　The Maritime Safety Committee at its sixty-ninth session considered the issue and decided to take no action on the relevant parts of the NAV 43 report and that a new report shall be prepared, which will cover all aspects of safety and environmental protection including the review of the IMO Rules and recommendations for navigation through the Straits, by the forty-fourth session of the Sub-Committee on Safety of Navigation with the Co-operation of Turkey.
