Born in 1954 in Taipei, Lo Tayu graduated from the China Medical College in 1980. During his student days, he was absorbed into music and organised a band "Rockers". His first album was released in 1982. With his uncompromising critical sense and self consciousness, his music was a startling surprise to the pop music industry at that time where he stirred up a 'Black Wave' in the pop music scene.
Lo Tayu's music is rich. His lyrics is colloquial yet poetic, always penetrating and thought provoking. Still warmly received after all these years, his songs continue to be adapted and performed by other singers.
After his first public concert entitled "Youth Movement", he went to New York to complete his medical studies. Although he qualified professionally, he decided to give up being a doctor to wholly devote his time in his music career. He turned to Hong Kong and set up Music Factory, a production house creating original music. The first album "Queens Road East" in 1991 aroused the Public attention and won numerous awards for him. His next album, "Capital" in 1992 expanded his reputation across Hong Kong to China and Taiwan and his songs were also recorded into karaoke and remain popular among the Chinese communities.
To date, Tayu has written over one hundred songs. His works has influenced the chinese pop music scene, ranging from subject matter, style and connotation. His presence is also detected in the study of literature, sociology and even political studies.
