3 Managers and OJT
Individual effort is undoubtedly important for staff development. Managers who have made it on their own tend to expect the same of their staff. Have they really been successful as a result of their own effort ? Was there no support or assistance given whatsoever from their own boss and seniors ? If they have in some way benefited like this, shouldn't they then extend the same assistance to their own staff ?
Managers who refrain from coaching their staff because they feel that their positions are threatened, are simply pitiful. Managers should engage in self-development instead and aspire to become even better than their staff. Good managers who are valuable to the organization, are ones who constantly seek self-improvement and relentlessly work towards staff development.
