"ON-THE-JOB TRAINING" & "OFF THE JOB TRAINING"

On-the-Job Training(OJT) is a method of training employees directly in the course of performing their regular duties or job. Supervisors must provide OJT for staff in their everyday work place.

Off-the-Job Training(Off-JT) is training where employees participate in training courses removed from their daily jobs. Off-JT is usually conducted at training institutes but staff may also be sent to colleges or asked to attend particular seminars outside, and this is also considered to be Off-JT.

Characteristics of OJT & Off-JT are outlined below.

OJT and Off-JT should complement each other. A combined effort will help the abilities of employees more effectively and efficiently. The employee's own spontaneity, however, is equally important in this. OJT and Off-JT should aim to assist in their self-development. Supervisors must therefore be aware of how employees try to develop themselves, decide which Off-JT courses they should attend and conduct appropriate OJT to this effect.
