Mr. Yoshida held his evaluation meeting with Mr. Tsuchiya. Without divulging information about Mr. Akiyama's case, he tactfully explained why he received a C. Towards the end of this meeting, he explained that he would try to allocate him a special pay increase next year. As expected, Mr. Tsuchiya didn't commend on anything particular. He simply signed his name.

The day for special pay increase awards arrived. Mr. Akiyama muttered to Mr. Yoshida, "Why wasn't I given a special pay increase ? Didn't you ask the Personnel Division to award me one ? I demand an explanation."

Mr. Yoshida had not indeed asked Personnel Division for a special pay increase for Mr. Akiyama, thinking it an unreasonable action for a manager to take. He responded to this with "I have no idea why this has happened I asked the Personnel Division for a special pay increase for you. The Personnel Division has a difficult job in deciding how to award special pay increases. I will try to arrange a special pay for you next year. Please keep your head down in the meantime."
