Criticism Against Performance Appraisals
Research undertaken in Japanese private companies regarding performance appraisals produced the following results.
・When personnel divisions were asked whether or not they had a problem with disclosing performance appraisal ratings to the evaluees themselves, 59.3% answered "yes". The following are a few examples of what they said.(some people gave more than one answer)
"Employees are aware that there are deficiencies in their evaluation techniques."

"It may result in over-generous evaluations."

"Low ratings may destroy an employee's motivation."

"It may create an uncomfortable atmosphere and rivalry among staff."

When employees were questioned about their companies' performance evaluation system, 60.7% answered that they were discontent. The following are a few examples of what they said.(some people gave more than one answer)
"It is unclear what is actually being evaluated."
