2 Leadership Style

There are three basic styles of leadership and these are outlined as follows.

(1) Command Style

The style where a leader takes overall authority and commands staff to work without listening to anything they might have to say. A leader with a strong interest in attaining the organizational target is more likely to take this approach. This type of leader tends to display the following behavior.

・Expect staff to follow them without question. "Trust me on this."

・Explain to their staff every detailed process involved in the work.

・Try to know everything all trivial details included, about what their staff are doing.

・Make all the decisions by themselves, to make it clear who is responsible.

・When they are to receive instructions from their boss, they do so unaccompanied by any member of their staff.

・Are quick to make judgment when staff try to consult them over something.

・Evaluate the performance of their staff and provide advice when they deem it necessary, without consulting them in the process.

(2) Participation Style

The style where a leader discusses the target of the organization and how the work might be managed with their staff. This type of leader tends to display the following behavior.

・Frequently use phrases such as "Let s think about this together." or "What do you think of this issue ?"

・Provide general advice to their staff and leave the details of the work to their hands.

・Try to understand the basics of what their staff are doing and how.

・Involve staff in the decision making process and take their opinions into consideration at every appropriate opportunity.

・Take staff with them when they are to receive instructions from their boss.

・Welcome staff when advice is sought and provide time to consider the problem over together.

・Involve staff in evaluating their own performance when the work has been completed.
