2 Working Towards the Target

Once individual targets have been set, each employee must strive to accomplish their assigned goal. Ranking staff according to whether or not they have fulfilled their targets is not the purpose of management by objective. Supervisors are expected to provide their full support so that they may attain these targets.

The following points should be considered.

・Monitor the progress of the employees' work and provide feedback and intermittent evaluations to motivate them.

・Share information that may assist them to reach their targets.

・Delegate authority and responsibility so that staff may work in an independent manner.

・If the target is found out to be unrealistic, revise it where necessary.

3 Evaluating Whether or not the Target has been Reached

The final stage of management by objective is to check whether or not the individual targets have been reached and evaluate how far the organizational goal has been attained. It is important to utilize the results of this evaluation when setting the next set of targets and training staff.

The points to be taken care of are outlined as follows.

・Clarify for what purpose the evaluation is being made.

・Base the adjudication of results on a pre-determined criteria of judgment.

・Review how the performance relates to the attainment of the overall organizational goal.

・Use a plus points rather than a minus point system.

・Discuss evaluations with the individual staff concerned.

・Provide feedback to staff over how they have been evaluated and to what extent the organizational goal has been attained.

・Ascertain which points must be utilized in staff training and in setting the following set of targets.
