Information about IEC 61892: Mobile and fixed offshore units- Electrical installations

Introduction

Objective

The objective of preparing this paper is to inform ISO/TC 67 about a series of international standards, exclusively for the offshore petroleum industry, which is under preparation in IEC/TC 18 Electrical installations of ships and of mobile and fixed offshore units.

Background

IEC/TC 18 has for a long time been dealing with electrical installations of units for use in the offshore petroleum industry. Third edition of IEC 92-505: Special features - Mobile offshore drilling units was published in 1984. The offshore world gradually expressed the need to deal with fixed offshore platforms in IEC/TC 18, thus combining all maritime electrotechnical applications in one standardization committee. In 1986, during the international meeting in Bergamo, it was decided that the scope of IEC/TC 18 should be extended and that the name "Electrical installations of ships" should be changed to "Electrical installations of ships and of mobile and fixed units". Working Group 18, convened by Mr. Carlisle, UK, was given the task of preparing proposals on how to achive the desired appoach. In 1992, Mr. Carlisle retired.

Mr. Pallesen, Norway, was appointed to succeed him.

At the IEC/TC 18 meeting held in Dubrovnik in November 1988, it was decided that the basis for the WDs should be:

The IEC 92-series;

The IMO 1989 MODU CODE;

Other relevant IEC Publications;

Existing Regulations relevant to a Country's own Offshore Industry;

Relevant output from other lEO Committees, Sub-Committees and Working Groups.

The ultimate aim should be to produce a set of international standards exclusively for the offshore petroleum industry.

IEC 61829: Mobile and fixed offshore units - Electrical installations

General

IEC 61892 forms a series of International Standards intended to enable safety in the design, selection, installation, maintenance and use of electrical equipment for the generation, storage, distribution and utilization of electrical energy for all purposes in offshore units which are being used for the purpose of exploration or exploitation of petroleum resources.
