4.2.2 If the lower platform does not have an opening, the deck of the platform shall be at least 600 mm wide between the edge and the first step. The platform shall have a handrail on the inboard and outboard side. The platform shall be provided with a means to lash a pilot ladder alongside to allow the pilot to step safely from the pilot ladder and onto the platform.
4.3 The breadth (B), as the effective breadth of the tread, shall be 450 mm or more.
4.4 The height of handrail shall be 1000 mm, and intermediate handrails shall be provided at half height thereof (see Figure 1).
4.4.1 The handrail stanchions shall be spaced at 1500 mm or less.
4.4.2 The handrails shall be of such shape and dimensions that they can be easily used. When ropes are used in place of handrails, they shall, as a rule, be of fibre ropes of outside diameter 22 min.
4.5 The steps shall be equally spaced (T) at approximately 300 mm tangential to the step noses, and provided with anti-slip surfaces.
4.5.1 The steps of a fixed ladder shall be flat and level at the ladders operating position.
