The National Weather Service is the primary source of weather forecast and warning information for the entire United States. TV weathercasters and private meteorology companies prepare their forecasts using the basic forecast and weather observation data the National Weather Service issues several times a day. The National Weather Service now operates a network of over 300 offices staffed with approximately 4,800 people. When the modernization program is completed by 1999, the National Weather Service will be a leaner, more efficient operation.
3. 使命・目的
The mission of the National Weather Service is to save lives, protect property, and create economic opportunities for the Nation. Advances in technology and successful efforts in meteorological research are helping National Weather Service forecasters to generate better short-term forecasts and long-range climate outlooks. National Weather Service offices issue warnings for tornadoes, hurricanes, flash-floods, severe storms, and other life-threatening events. Ongoing research and development efforts are yielding new breakthroughs in long-range climate forecasting.
