Article 28

When the gyoji stops an match in order to allow the athlete to fix his mawashi, detailed consideration is given so that the match is not affected.

2. When the match is resumed and the gyoji confirms that there are no objections from the head or sub-referees, he shall place his hands on the back of both athletes and call out “iika, iika” (can we begin, can we begin) and lightly hit their back with the call “hakkeyoi” and the match shall be resumed.

 

Article 29

When an athlete grabs a “tatemawashi”, “orikomi”, a bandage or supporter, etc., the gyoji shall instruct the athlete to let go. However, if it is difficult to give the instruction at that time, the gyoji may forgo it.

 

Article 30

When an athlete has a “gassho” (interlocking fingers) hold on his opponent, the gyoji shall instruct the athlete to unlock his hands.

2. The same reservation stipulated in Article 29 also applies to this situation.

 

Article 31 The actions of the gyoji are given below.

(1) When an athlete is on the dohyo and is carrying out the“chirichozu” ritual (water purification and declaration of nonpossession of weapons), the gyoji shall position himself inside the “tokudawara” in the front side of the dohyo (henceforth referred to as position one).

(2) When the athletes move to the center of the dohyo, the gyoji shall simultaneously move two steps forward from position one (henceforth referred to as position two).

(3) When the athletes squat (“sonkyo”), the gyoji shall confirm that they have synchronized their breathing and call out “kamaete” (on your mark) and move back one and a half steps to stand with legs apart. He shall then call out “te o tsuite,mattanashi” (hands down, waiting time is over) and slightly bend his knees, with both palms facing inward and slightly stretching the arms, he shall urge on the “tachiai” and start the match with the call, “hakkeyoi”.

(4) When an athlete is not ready and calls out “matta” (wait), the procedure provided above shall be replayed.
