RAVEN, 310,000-dwt Double-Hull VLCC

 

Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. has built the double-hull VLCC RAVEN at its Oppama Shipyard. The vessel was delivered to Mobil Shipping and Transportation Company in June 1996 as a sister vessel of VLCC EAGLE delivered in 1993.

The vessel meets the latest requirements for double-hull tankers, new MARPOL regulations adopted at IMO MEPC 32, and the United States OPA 90 concerning tank arrangement, double-hull dimensions and vessel stability.

The hull structure was designed using ABS DLA (Dynamic Load Approach) and advanced fatigue analysis to achieve the highest degree of structural reliability. DLA is a design method used to improving structural reliability by analyzing dynamic structural strength under wide range of load conditions.

1. Optimized hull-form and high propulsive efficiency

2. Large cargo tank capacity in triple segregation groups for flexible cargo handling

3. Hull structure of highest reliability with ABS DLA

4. Tin-free anti-fouling paint for underwater hull to prevent marine pollution

5. Use of light-colour modified- epoxy coating system with back- up anodes in water ballast tanks to simplify maintenance

6. Stages and ladders arranged in double-hull spaces for easy maintenance and inspection

7. Fail-safe system for major valves on cargo oil piping to prevent oil spills during cargo handling

8. Provision for flammable gas detection, inerting and gas-freeing for double-hull spaces

9. High-expansion foam fire extinguishing system for purifier room, valve power unit room, incinerator room and emergency generator room

10. Provision for emergency towing

11. Energy saving achieved by turbo generator system

12. Safe and efficient navigation by VMS (Voyage Management System)
