The point of finger pressure, the method of touch, and the adjustment of pressure are left to students, who can best find the methods most appropriate for them.

 

The student who is starting initial practice should be taught how to take in air inspiring action, then be made to attempt to produce basic sounds without placing a hand on the neck. Next, an attempt should made to determine whether the student is able to produce sound easily by placing the hand over the tracheostoma.

 

The first day is the most difficult. Continue the same exercises for a couple of days. Very rarely, a person is able to produce sequential sounds without placing his or her hand over the site.

 

(3) One person stated he was able to produce speech easily without using his hand as long as he turned his neck sideways. He may belong to type (1).

 

Some 50 people who had undergone esophageal reconstruction and attended esophageal speech classes offered by the Ginrei-Kai were recently surveyed, with the following results:
