Trial fluoscopic observation of the cervical esophagus has shown that the border between the remaining tissue, the graft, and the cut end of the esophagus can serve as a new glottis that can be made to vibrate.
Measures for producing basic sounds
(1) Some students say that it is easier to produce sounds by stretching the neck. This is probably because this action narrows the space in the reconstructed esophagus and makes it flat in front and in back.
(2) Placing a hand over the front of the neck
This popular method involves the effective selection of a site over which a finger or fingers are to be placed, since the site differs with the surgical procedure. Some people put their left index finger just over the tracheostoma. Some hold the tracheostoma between the thumb and index finger. To intake air, they reduce the finger pressure and to produce sound, they fix their finger or fingers over the site. Finger pressure is neither high nor low.
