米国とカナダでは、海岸線浄化処理方法に関して対応実行者に明確な指針を提供できるだけの十分な知識があると我々は確信している。最も最近の助言を掲載しているのが、米国石油協会が作成準備中の新しい“海洋マニュアル”で、これには米国、カナダ、及びヨーロッパの多数の機関からの評論と寄稿が掲載されている。
しかしながら、これからなすべき仕事は山積している。生物修復を含む種々の浄化処理方法を、世界の他の地域そして他の環境にある油汚染海浜で、試験しなければならない。我々は又、世界の各地で異なる種々のタイプの油に対して、様々な対応策をより完全に試験する必要がある。例えば、ベネズエラからのビチューメン(瀝青)含有の新燃料油オリマルジョン(orimulsion)の汚染の浄化方法を試験してみる必要性が大いにある。日本の科学者は、実験的に油汚染させた海岸線で、条件を限定した浄化実験を行うことで、オリマルジョンの知識を拡げることができるであろう。米国、カナダあるいはヨーロッパでは、この種の実験にまだ用いられていない多種多様な物理的、化学的及び生物修復剤を用いて実験することができるであろう。製品の実地試験の指針や基準は既に確立されており、どんな実験を行う場合にも利用されるべきであり(Mearns 1995年)、その結果は科学文献に掲載するべきである。更に述べるなら、長期の回復調査研究(Houghton他 1997年に記述されている類のもの)を試験現場で実施し、浄化処理された海岸線の生態系が完全に回復する速度を記録しておく必要がある。このような情報があれば、対応諸機にとって、うまく機能してそれ以上の危害を及ぼすことのない海岸線浄化方法を選択できる“道具箱”が、事実上手に入ることになる。海洋大気局HazMatは、この重要課題に関して、継続的な協力が続けられることを期待している。
