CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Study Purpose
(1) Objective
This Study was implemented by Japan Transport Cooperation Association as railway transport section for the Republic of Indonesia under Fiscal Year 1997/98 Program and was intended to justify the Pre-Feasibility for Quadruple Tracking along the Bekasi Railway Line as one of the railway infrastructure improvement in Jakarta Metropolitan Area.
(2) Background
As the economic growth of Indonesia continues rapidly, the social conditions by development in Jakarta Metropolitan Area, especially the population concentration, the land use development, the transport congestion etc. is remarkably changing situation and this situation is more and more spreading to eastward and westward from the center of Jakarta City.
On this situation, the road traffic is extremely increasing at every level of road and highway network and causing a chronic traffic congestion at the major roads in Jakarta Metropolitan Area.
On the other hand, the railway traffic is steadily increasing and sharing the passenger movement along the suburban Commuter trains and the major Inter-City trains. Besides, there are a number of proposals for new railway line network as urban transport system together with sub-projects under implementation by Jabotabek Railway Program. Furthermore the track separation between Inter-City and Commuter trains along the main railway lines is also considered and required for the future consideration.
Considering these transport situations surrounding Jakarta Metropolitan Area, Japan Transport Cooperation Association (JTCA) under the Fiscal Year 1996/97 Program conducted the land use survey at the eastward area of Jakarta, where the urgent development is most under progress such as in Bekasi, Cikarang and Krawang area. Further to this land use survey results,JTCA has carried out the Preliminary Study for Future Railway Network Plan and concluded the following two main definitive proposals.
・ Quadruple Tracking on Bekasi Railway Line
(Tanah Abang - Cikarang: 40km Route Length)
・ New Railway Line along Bekasi Corridor
(Tanjung Priok-Cikarang: 34km Route Length)
