The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between clinical symptoms and signs of the patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of' the knee and results of four health status instruments including NHP, SF-36, Lequesne index and WOMAC. The second aim of the study was to examine the relationship between radiological findings and clinical symptoms and health status questionnaires.

118 patients were included in this study. Demographic features, predisposing factors, duration of the pain, pain during resting time and movement, morning stiffness, feelings of instability and locking were noted. In clinical assessment, all patients were evaluated according to pain and crepitation during movement, range of motion of both knees, swelling and deformities. All of the questionnaires including NHP, SF-36, Lequesne index and WOMAC were completed by the patients. Anteroposterior and lateral plain radiographs in a weight-bearing and supine positions were obtained. Radiological assessments were done according to Kellgren and Lawrence system.

All the questionnaires were significantly correlated with each other and pain intensity (p<O.05). The correlations between clinical and radiological findings were not significant (p>O.05). It was found that the correlations between Lequesne index and pain and physical function dimensions of the NHP and WOMAC were positively significant and the correlations between Lequesne index and pain, general health, physical function and role dimensions of SF-36 were negatively significant (p<0.05).

COMPARISON OF ASEMETASIN AND ASETAMINOPHEN IN THE TREATMENT OF KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS

R. Celiker, H. Erturk, M. Aydin, B. Caner (Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey)

The Objective of the study is to investigate the efficacy and tolerability of asemetasin in the treatment of osteoarthritis in comparison to acetaminophen.

35 female patients with primary knee osteoarthritis were randomly assigned to receive asemetasin or acetaminophen treatment. Both groups also received exercise therapy in the form of home program. Lesion / non-lesion ratios were determined by 99mTc bone scans for the assessment of inflammation at the beginning and at the end of 12 weeks of treatment. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was used for assessment of pain and Lequesne Osteoarthritis Severity Index was used for functional evaluation. Side effects of drug therapy were recorded.

At the end of 12 weeks in the asemetasin group pain measured with VAS decreased significantly, there were also improvement in Lequesne index scores and lesion/non-lesion ratios in bone scans. 3 patients mentioned about mild gastric intolerance.

In conclusion asemetasin appears to be safe, well tolerated and effective on knee osteoarthritis.
