According to the World Health Organization (WHO), handicap exist when individuals are unable to fulfill expected social roles. The purposes of this study are to assess the handicap in spinal cord injury (SCI) patients out of hospital settings and to investigate the correlations between handicap and the extent of impairment, disability and depression. Eighty-five SCI patients were examined with CHART (Crag Handicap Assessment & Reporting Technique), Katz scale, neurologic level and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The results are as follows. 1) The handicap is significantly associated with both disability and depression. 2) There is no positive correlation between handicap and impairment. 3) Handicap is not associated with sex and sime since injury. We conclude that CHART is a useful tool for measuring handicap in Korean SCI patients, however, there is some point that need modification.
