12. Concluding Remarks

As mentioned in Chapter 1, this Report mainly focussed on review of demand forecast and cost estimation of Phase I and various comments were also presented in the previous Chapters.

Here mainly major selected review results and comments will be presented.

(1) Demand forecast

The demand forecast for Phase 1 route in 2011 is adopted under the condition that the whole LRT network is completed in 2011. In case the whole LRT network is not completed in 2011, the demand forecast for Phase 1route in 2011 may be smaller. Further in 2002, when the commercial operation starts on Phase 1 route, the demand forecast for Phase 1 route will be further smaller. In carrying out the financial analysis, these issues should be examined.

(2) Train operation plan

(a) As for the route plan which has a section jointly used by Red and Yellow line trains, there are many problems which can cause a bottleneck of transport in the future. Therefore, it is necessary to design separate routes or to eliminate mutual interference of both lines by realizing grade separation.

(b) The currently planned two basic track layouts for shuttling stations require shunting trains to a draw-out track after passengers have detrained on the platform. This makes it impossible to shuttle trains within two minutes. To solve this problem, it is desirable to adopt a shuttling system which uses a scissors crossing.

(c) Branching points from outbound and inbound tracks to rolling stock depots are planned between stations, though their exact locations are not known. However, tracks to rolling stock depot shall be branched from a station to allow moving train sets directly between the rolling stock depot and the station.

(3) Environmental impact assessment

With implementation of ELRT Project (with-project), deteriorated environmental situations of Bangalore caused by heavy road transport such as air pollution, road accident, traffic jam etc. would be much improved. Thus, the Project can improve the environmental conditions of Bangalore by improvement of an urban transport, and can be defined as "Project to Solve Environmental Issues". The Japanese Government will
