I am happy to provide this message on the occasion of the 6th Asian Pacific International Ballet Competition to be held during August l997.
Ballet is a medium for international cultural exchange and understanding that transcends the barriers of language. Australia has been an active contributor to the international community for many years, and our flagship company the Australian Ballet has performed at many of the world's top venues.
I am pleased that Australia is making a substantial contribution to the competition both in terms of competitors and through the participation in the jury of Ms Gailene Stock.
I am sure the competition will provide an opportunity for the next generation of ballet dancers to gain invaluable experience. Just as importantly, it gives them the chance to interact with their peers, and to discover the joy of performance in an international environment.
I congratulate the organizers of this important event and wish them and all entrants every success.

1997年8月に開催される第6回アジア･パンフイック国際バレエ･コンクールに際し、このメッセージを贈らせていただくことを光栄に思います。
バレエは、言葉の障壁を越えた国際文化交流およびその理解のための媒体となります。
オーストラリアは、長年国際社会へ積極的に貢献してまいりました。また、私共が誇るオーストラリア･バレエは、世界最高のレベルのバレエ公演が開催される多くの地において公演してまいりました。
オーストラリアが、出場者の参加により、また審査員Gailene Stock女史を通じて、実質的に貢献していることを喜びといたします。
このコンクールにより、次の世代のバレエダンサーたちが計り知れないほど貴重な経験をする機会が与えられることを確信いたします。またこれにより、同胞たちと互いにふれあい、国際的な環境の中で演技を楽しむ喜びというものを発見する機会を与えられることも、見逃すことはできません。
この重要なコンクールを開催していただいた方々へお祝いを申し上げるとともに、開催者および全参加者の御健勝をお祈り申し上げます。
