2. Education and Training at the Maritime Safety School
The Maritime Safety School was established to teach the skills and knowledge required to carry out operations as JMSA personnel and to train the minds and bodies of its students. The courses of study offered are Regular Course and Training Course. ]Since the Regular Course educates personnel who are destined to become middle level officers, it accepts graduates of senior high schools or enactments of higher learning. The courses of study are divided into the following curriculum and courses. In addition to being taught the knowledge and skills related to each specialty respectively, students acquire the education required to carry out operations as newly assigned Maritime Safety officers. The Training Course is also devised to upgrade the job-related capabilities of JMSA personnel. It implements the specialized education and training personnel already engaged in maritime safety duties require to carry out their duties.
 
 
The Moji Branch of the Maritime Safety School was established to teach newly hired personnel who already possess a certificate of competency in seamanship or other related certification. In addition to teaching the specialized knowledge and skills, such as those related to crime investigation and maritime rescue, required in maritime safety operations, it teaches newly assigned traffic control officers at Traffic Advisory Service Centers and personnel engaged in guard and security operations the specialized knowledge and skills required of them respectively.
At the Miyagi Branch of the Maritime Safety School, aviation personnel receive the education and training to acquire the knowledge and skills required for the safe operation of aircraft. In order to enhance their ability to carry out requisite duties, the Miyagi Branch offers aviation personnel study and training in eight curricula. This includes a Basic Helicopter Curriculum, which teaches the basic skills required of helicopter pilots, and a Special Operations Curriculum, which teaches the special skills required to carry out operations such as airlift techniques.
